Mail Theft Back in The Estates

Mail Theft Back in The Estates

A neighbor reported today that their outgoing mailbox was emptied by someone who took the mail. This happened on Monday morning when they left a check for a regular household service vendor in the outgoing slot. The thief changed the original amount on the check from $151.00 to $3,500.00 and attempted to go to the bank and cash it. Suspicious of the noticeable change and having been presented with the thief’s out of state ID, the bank teller stepped aside to call the account holder to verify the check was valid. The person trying to cash the check immediately left the bank. In the end the bank did say that if the account holder had not answered the phone, they probably would have cashed it.

We are in high tourist season which unfortunately brings crime to our community. Please be cautious when leaving mail in your outgoing box for the mailman to pick up. It may be worth the trip to the post office to mail any payments out.

A report will be filed with LAPD and the Postmaster General’s office.
